I Hate The Little Mermaid
In my post toddler years I always hated a couple of those older Disney Princesses. I avoided watching them when they were on because I knew that is was just going to be a big cringe-fest and leaving me a troubled feeling at the pit of my stomach.
I don’t know that much of what happens to them after they get with the prince and those stupid straight to DVD sequels don’t count for me.

Ariel (the little mermaid) She left a Kingdom under the sea where she can explore, go on adventures looking for treasure and do whatever she wants to be cooped up in a castle where she would just sit, look pretty and talk to about one or two people. That has to be the worst deal in the world! It would’ve been better if the movie was like Splash and the guy had the ability to breath underwater and he can visit Ariel without her sacrificing so much. What if the marriage doesn’t work out? Where the hell will she go? She doesn’t know that many humans except for the Prince. Ursula is already dead so it would be difficult for her to get back.
I see her probably selling herself on the street to support herself but only people with fish fetishes will be her customers. Jumping into a marriage without thinking of the consequences is a bad idea. Lucky Disney gave a happily ever after ending.

Cinderella yeah yeah she was abused and treated like a slave by her family but Cinderella was no saint. She’s the biggest animated gold digger I know. From rags to glamerized riches is what almost every rap song is about aside from sex.
Prince: Ummmmm what’s this charge in my credit card?
Cindy: I always use your card when I go to the casino.
Prince:$500000!
Cindy: Yeah I also bought some new dishes and dresses.
Prince: I bought you a new dress last week.
Cindy: That was last weeks style I want to keep up with Snow White.
Prince: I think it’s time you get a job.
Cindy: No.
Prince:…….
Cindy:…..
Prince: *bitch slap*
What should have happen was to order her talking rats to eat step-mother and step-sister alive in their sleep and turn their home into a tailor/dress making business since the rats are so crafty. It could’ve been very successful but nooooooooo she just did it easy and married rich.
Subtle sexist stereotypes made to look cute with songs and talking animals really piss me off.

I loved Disney Princesses when I was younger and I still kind of like them now. I never really thought about their lives after they got with the princes, because I was sort of young back then. But it’s interesting to see from your point of view. Sure, it’s sexist, but I like the fact that it’s got a happy ending to the story, although the end of the story is really just ‘the prince and princess lived happily ever after’.

I hate those Princess stories. The “love” is all fake. The Prince/beast/whatever thinks the girl is the most beautiful thing in the world and that’s the only reason why he’ll ever want her. It’s dumb.

My parents claim I watched The Little Mermaid when I was little, but I can’t, for the life of me, remember it. I don’t remember much about Cinderella, either, but if the talking rats had eaten the stepmother and stepsisters alive, it wouldn’t have been a Disney movie.
Not that I’m against Cinderella’s stepfamily being eaten.
My favorite Disney princess is definitely Mulan, although that came out in 1998, which is relatively newer when compared to The Little Mermaid (1989) and Cinderella (1950!). The only other princess I can tolerate is Belle.

No…you totally ruined it for the kidz!!! Hahaha. Seriously, these Disney princess shites are no-no for us guys because we’re oozing with machismo even as kids. But hell, what have you done to them! Hahaha. Sure, they’re gonna live happily-ever-after coz that’s what it’s all about. I never really thought of sexism or stereotypes in children’s stories. Dyou think these exists in other animated stuff? Like Cedie or Dog of Flanders for instance. Haha.
Payce!

PS Btw, I totally dig the way you write.

I can’t believe you didn’t like Disney movies as a kid! For me, i was so obsessed and loved every bit of it.
Heh, I guess they don’t show what happens after because it’s happily ever after and that’s what they view as the perfect life. Besides, we’re so young we don’t need to be scarred by a hooker Ariel trying to sell herself

Pessimism all over. *rock on!* Haha. *Kidding*
Err..I think that’s why they’re called FAIRY TALES. Coz it’s just super magical, predictable and super smothered with happiness! It pisses me off most of the time too, and if you hate Ariel the most, I hate Snow White the most! I don’t know, she’s just so irritating, and always waiting for his prince to save her. So dependent.
I don’t really hate disney. I like some of their cartoons, and I liked Ariel before, and Jasmine from Aladdin, but… I didn’t really pondered on the things that happened after. But yes, you have a point. What if their marriage didn’t work right? And what if Eric cheated? Or Ariel fell for another guy? Haha.
That would’ve been pretty messy.
Err..Exene? What’s your problem? You sound like you’re really pissed off? Haha.
You’re funny. :p

Aww, I love the Little Mermaid, haha~ It’s one of my favs. =P
It does give young girls the wrong idea of everything turning out “happily ever after” but I love ‘em growing up and still do.

Lol, I used to love The Little Mermaid, but I think it was largely b/c the main character was a mermaid ^_^
The Disney princes never had any personality (ok, and some of the princesses, too). I never got why they were all in love with each other… I mean Cinderella only freaking danced with the prince and suddenly they’re *in love* (and I love how no one else had the same foot size as her in the whole freaking country, lol). I mean, he could have turned out to be a total loser or have some weird sexual fetish or something. DISNEY D:

Get a grip ok! And remember: Everything that spells Disney is just fiction lol!
But then again, stupid and gullible people tend to blend their truths and lies, to the point that these movies can have a major influence on them big time. So yeah, in the end, truth is stranger than fiction, if you get my drift. ;-p

Hehe, oh well. Over here, we got Disney just like you and I probably watched every second of it (I was a whore for commercials when I was little too!) but also read a lot of old stories, like the Grimm ones, and H.C Andersen (Danish) and especially Astrid Lindgren (Swedish) ones. The Little Mermaid as you know it isn’t the one I know, at all. H.C. Andersen wrote that story, and if you haven’t read the real deal you HAVE TO! Especially as you dedicated an entire blog to it (I knooow you meant to blog about sterotypes and I totally get your point!) but you have to read it - it’s the sadest story ever (Scandinavian stories tend to end badly) and it kind of confirms your theory. When you, have, I look forward reading that blog entry

haha! maybe you should make a short story or mini movie on ”the dark side of cinderella” ”i want to keep up with snow white” haha.
I guess they’re teaching kids that no matter what the hell you do, you don’t have to have brains - just look good and marry some rich prick.
i’m glad my brain couldn’t process that information during that time. haha.

I’ve never really been a fan of Disney characters or movies, though my favorite Disney princess is Ariel for the sole reason that she’s a mermaid and I love mermaids
I have nothing else to contribute with my comment. I am SO over feminism.

I love (twisted) fairy tales and I love Disney movies. Disney princesses are better off in my imagination’s version of what happened.
All of the princes were so boring!
Mulan was great because she was such a badass. I have a thing for badass girls.
As for Cinderella being a gold digger, you’re completely right. Which is probably why on YouTube there’s a Cinderella video set to “Gold Digger” (link). Seriously, ignoring the questionable video-ing skills of the creator, it’s perfect in a terribly bad way.
Mostly, I love retold versions of most princess fairy tales. When I was younger I read Just Ella by Margaret Peterson Haddix in which Cinderella realises Prince Charming was boring as hell and leaves him for her tutor’s son.
A year or so ago I discovered a short film called Dysenchanted about various fairy tale princesses and female characters (Snow White, Goldilocks, Alice, Dorothy, etc.) in group therapy together. It’s fantastic, funny, and also available on YouTube.

It’s weird. As a child, I was always more drawn to the Disney princesses who weren’t cliched fairy tales. I never much liked the ones who were hopelessly in love with the Prince or had to wait for a guy to come rescue her. My favorite was Belle– and even though the movie has a happily-ever-after (I mean, what do you expect?), at least Belle was smart and independent and the story had a good point–beauty is only skin deep.
Oh, and Mulan kicks ass.

I used to love those Disney films and I still do. But now I’m obviously like 12 years older so I’ve come to realize that those films are way too juicy and predictable. And they’re all about the same thing! Princess has some personal problems, princess meets prince but somehow they can’t be together, evil stepmother/witch throws a curse on poor princess, prince rescues princess, prince and princess kiss and get married and they live happily ever after.

If they piss you off then DON’T WATCH THEM. It should be obvious to even people who DON’T watch disney movies that they’re always “happily ever after.” That’s why they’re movies. Yes, real life doesn’t happen like that. And if you don’t like movies that don’t reflect real life, then DON’T WATCH DISNEY MOVIES. Duh.
