Would you run this ad?

Site news: I uploaded the Cold Case “Boy Crazy” Episode in streaming form. It’s the one about the murder of a young girl that looked and acted like a boy(read this post for more information). It isn’t graphic but it’s very heart-breaking especially the last ten minutes of the episode. A lot of people realized that there was nothing wrong with her but it was already too late. *sniff*
It’s HD quality so it’s better if you watch it on large screen, double click. Also looks better on firefox but is ok on internet explorer. Watch video here.

On to the topic….

It’s a very short post and you might’ve been comforted with this question before in school.

If you run a school newspaper and this group of mainly white males wanted to post an advertisement that they wanted a discussing on the following topics.

The history books should be rewritten because the holocaust never happened.
Why minorities and women get special treatment.
Why doesn’t science talk about the seriously important things, like being gay is actually a mental disease.

Would you run that ad? Think about the first ammendment and freedom of speech.

I don’t think I’d run that ad. Wait, the holocaust never happened??? Gawd. I’m so behind. I’m not even aware of that.

“Why doesn’t science talk about the seriously important things, like being gay is actually a mental disease.”

    - - - I don’t know about this either.

    I waited for 3+ minutes, but it didn’t load… :( Oh, well… So, it’s like… Boys Don’t Cry?

The ad… No, I would not run that ad. For me, first amendment doesn’t mean trampling on the rights of others. The Holocaust did happen — undeniable, documented proof exists.

Well um… NO. What did you expect? That ad is just crazy…

First of all, there’s damn proof out there that the holocaust happened. It’s undeniable.
Everyone in the world should get the same treatment. I personally think those white males think that minorities and women getting the NORMAL treatment means special treatment… Bottom line: Their philosophy is insane.
Um… since when did gayness become a mental disease?! Dotdotdot.

No, I wouldn’t run that ad. I know everyone has freedom of speech, but that ad is really offensive and would probably hurt a lot of people’s feelings. I think in this case that’s more important than freedom of speech.. especially since those guys wanting to place the ad have a distorted view of the world.

NO i would definitely never run an add like that! it’s offensive and rude! especially the one about the holocaust.

thank you for posting that exene :) i’ll definitely watch that!

on your question, i would prefer it would be an article, preferably an editorial column, rather than ads. an article is enlightening and can also be intriguing, unlike ads… ads that are enlightening only comes in a blue moon.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t watch the video… But I will try to find it, though! XD And I don’t think I would run that ad. It’s better off to another section in the newspaper.. ^^

I wouldn’t post the ad - it’s wrong and misleading, and it wouldn’t be responsible journalism to publish it. People have the right to freedom of speech, but they also have a right not to publish something in their own, private newspaper. You have the right to say anything you like, but you can’t force others to endorse or print your opinion.

A lot of magazines/newspapers don’t accept certain types of advertisements, like legit fitness magazines might not want to print a ton of ads for diet pills, or it would undermine their credibility.

No, I wouldn’t run an ad like that. It’d be too offensive for women, minorities, homosexuals, and people that are/know holocaust survivors.

Plus, most of it is false. The holocaust did happen, and I don’t think that there is solid evidence that ‘being gay’ is a mental disease.

The thing is, “freedom of speech” doesn’t actually mean complete freedom of speech :P There are still limitations…

Probably not the last one, as it is school inappropriate, but anything controversial without being malicious I would post so long as it was noted that it was just an ad and didn’t reflect the opinions of the paper itself.

I think there’s a fine line between instances where citing the First Amendment is viable and ones where somoene’s just using it as an excuse to subject the public to possible racism and biogtry. Everyone’s entitled to think or believe whatever they want, however when a group of people, namely a large white male group wants to “point out” falsities in their school’s history books, or try to prove that being gay is a mental illness is so far from the point of the First Amendment. I don’t know, I’m always hardpressed to tell someone they shouldn’t voice what they think when I believe they’re morons. *lol*

The fact that there is historical proof that the Holocaust did happen, and medical information that being gay is not a mental disorder, these kids are only proving how ignorant and out of the loop they really are.

I wouldn’t run the ad. I think those guys are just being dumb and trying to ruffle a lot of feathers. It’s their personal opinion, yah, but it doesn’t belong in a school newspaper.

Well the thing about the holocaust not happening is total crap, and school newspapers aren’t supposed to be putting up lies, are they?

The thing about minorities and woman getting special treatment is fine though. It’s true, too. Not all the time anyway, but sometimes they do get special treatment rather than equal treatment.

And homosexuality as a mental disease is not “seriously important”, and I am so sick of everyone trying to say everything is a disease/disorder. If you like things to be neat and perfect, you must have OCD. If you have a hard time focusing, you must have ADHD; omg I hate that so bad. It’s a goddamn personal preference, not a disease!

I run the newsletter at my school, and I definitely would not run those advertisements. There are parents who read the newsletter and doing so would upset a lot of people, and they would be very offensive.

It kind of makes me think about popularity and stuff. People who are known by many people and think they can take over anyone.. well.

That ad actually made me angry. I can’t comment on the “special treatment” thing because people will automatically be like “she’s a woman. She’s bound to say that.” but the gay thing is a load of bollocks and holocaust deniers piss me off no end. I’ve just finished reading a book [yesterday, actually] called “Witness” by Samuel Drix. It’s a holocaust memoir by a Polish Jewish doctor and it’s unbelievable. I’d recommend it to EVERYONE. It’s brilliant but horrible at the same time.

Ugh… I wouldn’t let them run that advertisement at all. Y es, minorities and women get special treatment, but the other two are just STUPID.

Being gay USED to be considered a mental disease, but they took it out of the Psychology “handbook” because it really isn’t. The Holocaust did happen and taking it out of history books would be denial like Japanese with certain -cough- events that happened in Asia. -coughcomfortwomencough-

Hmmm this is interesting. Is there a reason why it’s a ’school’ newspaper by the way? Or is that just random? Some of those topics are quite vulgar to be honest. I know the purpose of a good title is to grab your attention, and these certainly do that, but there’s a fine line between something that grabs your attention and something that is just plain rude.

How exactly are these topics discussion points anyway? They seem to be so typically one sided that no further discussions are required. The purpose of a school newspaper is to educate and inform by providing solid facts and evidence. Most of these topics are more opinions that are not backed up by facts, so no I would no publish this ad.
